Im on a side project for my tecate 4 quad. Are there any kdx model year that had a 6 speed transmission? And also what years interchange? Im only concerned with 1980's era
-
If nobody knows off the top of their head you can go here:
http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/ATV/parts.html (http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/ATV/parts.html)
Click on the part number and it will show you the interchange for that specific part.
Look up the shafts and the gears and you'll know what all will fit...

I checked it out and those type of sites dont serve a purpose when your dealing with the tecate 4. I dont think the engine had enough production time. Anyways
If you could let me know which kdx250 bikes are 6 speeds from the 80's and if any model years are directly interchangeable that would be a huge help. Ive recieved enough info to feel confident that its been done by some old school lads out on the west coast. Im getting the info through guys that back in the day learned from the old knocks.

What year is your Tecate?
-
the tecate engines always looked like kx and kdx-engines and they all are 5 speeds ... only the kx and kdx 125 , 175 and 200 are 6 speed, as far i know ..
which year and how much gears is your tecate??
-
The T4 was only made 87-88 and they are 6 speeds. Odd, I just found technical data and hat says the 1980 kdx250 is a 6 speed. Once I determine which if any kdx from the 80's were 6 speeds, those will be the bikes I will start to look at ratio #'s and go from there.
-
i dont think that the older gears will fit to the newer engine... but you should try it ... 8-)

The KDX250 had a 6 speed up to 84, That was the last year for it in the states until the 91-94 watercooled KDX250 came out. I had a 84 KDX250. Totally differant bottom end than the Tecate but who knows it may work. The Tecate trans was actually offered in kit form as a wide ratio kit for the 85-? KX250s for those that wanted to convert them for offroad use. I had a wr 4th and 5th in my 86 KX250. The ignition/lighting coil/flywheel from the Tecate was also offered as a kit for the KX250.

Your confusing the tecate 3 with the machine I have wihich is the atv kxf tecate 4. The tecate 3 was able to interchange tranny gears with some of the kx250's. The tecate 4 tranny is completely different from the tecate 3/kx250's.
Flyin Hawaiian sounds like you may have verified what I needed to know. Your telling me if I were to buy a 1980 kdx250 tranny it has 6 gears correct? That will be my starting point. I was pointed in the direction of early to mid kdx's without being told specific years. I believe based on what your saying early to mid would essentially be 1980-84 for the simple fact that they share the 6 speed gears.
Remember lads. Not to be confused with the kxt250 tecate 3. There are virtually no similarities between the T3 and T4. The kits that flyin Hawaiian speaks of were deff for the T3 not the T4, that I can personally verify.

If you want to check out which years and models have 6 speed boxes, go to the link I sent you and look at the trans for the different years and makes.... If they have a 6th gear you have another place to look. If they only have 5 gears, move on :-)

all engines of tecate 3 are optical same like the older kx/kdx 250īs that were produced over the years...
tecate4 engine has the 88-91 kx250 cylinder and changes in the bottom end with diferent clutch-actuation and a anti-vibration-shaft in front of the crank... but a diferent crank-case is no point to say that the trannies also are much diferent... its possible that in the tecate4 is installed the old 6speed of the earlier kdx250...
i say it again, its worth a try...

Exactly. It wont be a quick process but a winter project none the less

A kawie dealer told me this morning that no kdx250 had a 6 speed. Im confused. Flyin Hawaiian says 6 and I found info on the net that says 5 & 6. Does anyone actually know? Getting way to many answers to conclude anything. I tried to open the fiche. Can't likely my android.
-
No offense to your Kawi dealer but I believe he is mistaken.
Tell him to look up a 81-84 KDX250 and count the gears...
This is what my research shows...
80 KDX250 5 speed
81 KDX250-B1 KDX250 6 speed
82 KDX250-B2 KDX250 6 speed
83 KDX250-B3 KDX250 6 speed
84 KDX250-B4 KDX250 6 speed
91 KDX250 5 speed
92 KDX250 5 speed
93 KDX250 5 speed
94 KDX250 5 speed

you could look and compare it here in the oem-partslists .
www.cmsnl.com ...
and agreed with sandblaster... there are no much kawasaki dealers, that know much about the old aircooled kawasakis... they sell and repair the newer bikes... at this point i can say that my local kx-dealer is often stunning when i give him an order with parts-numbers, that he couldnt find. for example my 86-kx500 motor the dealer has microfishes only from 88 and newer...

Are you certain on that info? Dang I just bought a 1980 tranny. All the stuff I read shows the 1980 as a 6 speed. 1980-84 all 6 speeds. Im got on kawies parts fiche gonna compare gear for gear

That is the info I pulled up at partszilla.com
Just ask the guy you bought the trans from how many gears does it have.
You can physically count them..
If he counts 10 including the one that is part of the shaft then it is a 5 speed.

If he counts 12 including the one that is part of the shaft then it is a 6 speed.
