Sorry everyone but I had to share this out of excitement and I can't think of anywhere else that this news might be more appreciated. I was just invited to the Team Green Baja reunion at Team Green headquarters in Irvine CA to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Team Greens first Baja victory. I will be sure to take lots of photos and get lots of stories to share with the site. The reunion will be in on October 26th so I think there might have to be another KXRiders California ride soon after that.

They're probably gonna have cool stuff on display like Danny Hamel's last Baja 1000 winning K5, Mike LaRocco's last AMA 500cc National Championship K5, Destry Abbott's Hare and Hound Championship K5, etc........
I'll see if I can sneak one out in my pocket.

Come on Ladies choke down those morning after pills & tell us about your debauchery

Well. The start of the first season was a little slow. But as the season went on the writers and actors really started to click. Man the situations those Grey haired lady's get themselves into.
-
Yeah I figured you're ashamed of what you had to do to get the info :-D
Still trying to drink away the imagery of what the big green men made you do
Why you gotta be so mean, bad enough not being there
-
I just got home......I'm still in a state of euphoria from seeing many of the faces that I haven't seen in over a decade......many old friends.....lots of big names from the industry.....let me get settled in and I'll post up a good story and a few pics......A big thanks to Motorrad for being my date and not embarrassing me..... :-D
-
What a great night.........The best way I can describe how I feel about the reunion is this.......picture one of the most special era's of your life......now imagine jumping into a time machine and being able to spend just one more day "live" during that era...... :-)
One of the highlights of the night for me was when I stepped up to the podium to speak.......I spoke of the first experience I had with the team and how much of a role Team Green had played in my early youth........I could type down everything that was said but its one of those moments where you just had to be there......Before I went up to speak, Motorrad was kind enough to bring his Danny Hamel seat with him......The seat was stashed away in a box and kept from view. I told everyone a story of how my buddy had been walking though a swap meet and came across 2 KX500 seats. I told everyone that he had purchased them both for $15 dollars. As I finished the story I pulled the seat from the box at an angle that did not reveal the name on the seat......I closed my story with these words...."what made these seats so special was not that they were KX500 seats, what makes these seats so special is the name on the seats and who they belonged to"........I turned the seat over and the room gasped and went silent........The silence was broken by the sounds of emotional chatter and a standing ovation........Motorrad was gracious enough to put the seat on display for the night for everyone to view. A major thanks to Motorrad for his contribution to the night.
Last week Motorrad and I located another special seat on EBay.......It was another KX500 seat with the name Ty Davis on the back. Lucky for Motorrad that Ty was also at the reunion. I introduced the two and Motorrad was able to get a Ty Davis autograph on his Ty Davis K5 seat......super cool
The end of the night was bittersweet. It was great to see everyone again but at the same time it was sad that this moment would most likely never happen again. It was the first time in almost 20 years that ALL these people were in the same place at the same time for the same reason. Motorrad and I said our goodbye's and made our way out.
Motorrad took pictures just as I did and I'm sure he will post them up as soon as he gets an opportunity.........

Kawasaki headquarters in Irvine California.........Lots of heavy hitters in this picture.......motorcycle legend Danny LaPorte in the orange pants is speaking with Pro Circuit Suspension legend Jim "Bones" Bacon in the red hat......oh yeah....the man in the wheelchair is non other than Mitch Payton owner of the Pro Circuit supercross team.

Some of my better friends..........Motorcycle God Larry Roeseler and David Pyle..........David Pyle is the man responsible for developing the KX500 for off road racing from 1987 to 1997.......I introduced him to Motorrad and needless to say they had some very interesting conversation :-D :-D
(http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/USMC500/Team%20Green%20Reunion/DSC02152_zps0507a7c4.jpg) (http://s1092.photobucket.com/user/USMC500/media/Team%20Green%20Reunion/DSC02152_zps0507a7c4.jpg.html)
Mark Johnson at the podium......Mark was Team Green's first off road manager and the man responsible for bringing the KX500 and Team Green to Baja back in 1987......He was also responsible for developing the careers of racers like Kevin Windham, Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, etc......
(http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/USMC500/Team%20Green%20Reunion/DSC02154_zpsb695a323.jpg) (http://s1092.photobucket.com/user/USMC500/media/Team%20Green%20Reunion/DSC02154_zpsb695a323.jpg.html)
I could be wrong, but I think Motorrad is having a good time

Motorrads contribution to the display at the reunion......I still don't know if Motorrad understands just how much it means to everyone that he saved Danny Hamel's seats from a tragic fate........this item was a real tear jerker for many in attendance.
(http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/USMC500/Team%20Green%20Reunion/DSC02168_zps1596cb01.jpg) (http://s1092.photobucket.com/user/USMC500/media/Team%20Green%20Reunion/DSC02168_zps1596cb01.jpg.html)
For you Supercross fans you may recognize this fella as Skip Norfolk........Jeremy McGraths mechanic from 1991 to 1998.......In my conversation with him I asked him about his experiences being such a big factor in the success of one of the greatest Supercross racers in history......He told me that they were good times but he couldn't have done it without his Team Green origins........Team Green and desert racing in Baja are his roots and he remembers them well.
(http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/USMC500/Team%20Green%20Reunion/DSC02172_zpse46a0a75.jpg) (http://s1092.photobucket.com/user/USMC500/media/Team%20Green%20Reunion/DSC02172_zpse46a0a75.jpg.html)
My favorite photo of the night........These men are some of the few who let me tag along as a young man and made me a part of Team Green Kawasaki..........From left to right, Baja racers Ted Hunnicutt, Ty Davis, Me, Larry Roeseler.............during this picture Larry was telling me "My God!! When was the last time these guys were in the same spot with the same bike at the same time?!" If this picture doesn't say "Nostalgia" I don't know what does.......

Me jealous :?
Maybe a little
It will be interesting to hear more stories.
I'm glad that someone from the site was able to be there and record this for history..
-
:-D
Thanks
-
The best description I can give. since im not good at storys. of the personality of the entire event, and everyone there.
Imagin Pulling up a lawn chair to a camp fire, with all these guys around, drinking corona somewhere in baja. Just talking and Telling storys. That was the way the entire evening was.. Just good desert people. If you didnt know who they were, you wouldnt know it wasnt your own family.
-
Wow got goose bumps all over to cool guys.
-
Too cool. What a fun time and a once in a lifetime event. The seat was icing on the cake. BSing with those guys would be fun and an education. So much experience there! Thanks for sharing.
When my brother and I were drag racing heavy back in the 70's there was a near by block prep and crankshaft guy that was very well known. We had gone to pick up parts and ended up BSing with the owner of the shop, Don Prudehomme and Don Garlits for a half an hour. Walked away saying "Did that just happen?" They were just a couple of guys into racing though they were at the top of their game at the time. Asked us about OUR cars and set ups. Crazy.
-
This picture was taken by my buddy Mark "Kato" Kariya......He is a well known photographer and rider whos work has appeared MANY times in all the popular magazines......He snapped this shot of Dave Pyle "downloading" KX500 information into the brains of Motorrad and USMC500.... :-D

Ok Oscar, tell us word for word everything that Mr. Pyle said :-D
He said to us "What I am about to tell you is going to end every rumor about the KX500 you have ever heard........first off the wide ratio tranny (EVERYTHING HERE HAS BEEN AUDITED AND REMOVED BY TEAM GREEN C.I.A FOR YOUR PROTECTION FOR IF YOU KNEW THIS INFORMATION YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE KILLED) and that's how we were able to make the KX500 last for 1000 miles at wide open throttle"............. :-D

I agree, that was really mean...
Funny thing is I still have a cylinder that say's "Oscar" on it.
There are a few mods I've been wanting to try but didn't want to ruin my test cylinder :-o

I have a whole selection of drill bits, we can make whatever size jets we need :-D

wow........I'm glad that I'm friends with so many fine gentlemen that don't hold a grudge....hahahahaha
Motorrad will post up some of the topics that were discussed as some point......I think that Motorrad understood many of the technical terms more than I did.
And the only reason I seized my motor is because I got my main jet and pilot jet reversed...... :-o :-D

motorrad is one of the actual k5-gurus, that many of the guys here have to honor in the right way.. 8-)
we all can only learn from each others experience ...
in my case it is much learning by doing after reading and understanding theoretical facts... and the fact that i grew up between cz-bikes and motocross riders. and now i own bikes, that no one could buy new here in east germany, before the fall of the iron curtain in 1989. :-)
-
That WAS mean! Funny, but mean. You guys should have had hidden microphones so as to retain all the info you gleaned! Or at least have it before the Team Green CIA comes and deletes the entire evening from your minds...

I did, as well as several other very interesting details...
I can't wait for other information to be released...
I'm trying to throttle my questions back and not ask too many at once... It is hard...

I noticed some HUGE radiators.....
What I couldn't see was the hose routing.
Any details on that?

Yep, I saw them and I know how they fit
Looking at mine yesterday and I see that it was a good idea.
I might even do it on my next build.

3 row. was many variations of them through the years. (ones like mine were confirmed after I described them)..
stock routing. stock pump (on the Baja bikes).
some of the MX boys got modded impellers and pump covers
they were actually seizing the bikes with the bigger rads. on WOT runs before the bike got up to full temp. so they started taping up the rads with duct tape, and putting temp moniters on the bars.
when they were first doing it. they had seized 6 or so bikes, before a Baja race. admittedly had no idea what it was (they were chasing carbs and ignitions). had a brain storm one night.
stuck LR on a bike, with a BIG BIG fluke meter duct taped to his arm, told to go run it WOT down the Mexican highway. to see what it does. his reply of course "But waint, they are seizing" and the response was "try to catch it"..
yep. turns out they were cold seizing them, because they wernt letting them get warm enough before run hard

Any comments on the radiators and hose routing?
okay mr smart guy. how do they fit
-
I'm not smart, you already told me
-
Any word on what temps they let them warm up to before getting on it hard?
-
I'm not smart, you already told me
okay. whats the answer of how they made them fit on THAT bike
-
They machined the cases to fit the larger plates and shimmed the mounts to take some of the stress off the frame.

wrong.
that's how Im going to do mine.
so again.
how did they make it so that bike fit.
(I can hear you frantically checking your text history)
-
The answer isn't there, I have your texts memorized :-P
I'm guessing wider frame...
Go ahead and trash me again, I love it... :-o

Works cases.. custom cast with narrower section there.... as well as many other things changed.
-
So.... Where are some of those cases.... and other custom parts?
Did you discover a secret stock pile and a hording them all to yourself?
-
What's the benefit of the bigger motor mounts/narrow cases?

They machined the cases to fit the larger plates and shimmed the mounts to take some of the stress off the frame.

nice idea, but you need tons of these worksparts, because there are no spareparts available for replacing. :-D
as my buddy gerald started to work as mechanic in the worldchampionchip he works first at "de´groot-kawasaki" the official factory team... than later at "rinaldi-yamaha" also the official factory-team and racing & development for the production parts... actual he works at ktm as the mechanic of ken roczen ,the fastest guy, that i ever seen..
and gerald told me everywhere he was working, the old worksparts (worn out or never needed new parts) would be destroyed at the end of the season, that they cant fall in privateers hands . the reason is: in wrong hands they could damage a production bike , and they never could replaced and would bring a bad image to the manufacturers ...

Everything, but I'll settle for whatever you would like to share that you haven't already... :-)
You mentioned that they used custom cases with oversized main brgs and trans brgs... was there anything else they changed on the cases such as crank volume, balancing, custom cranks... Pistons, porting, squish, ect..
