G'day guy i hope all is well in supermoto land !!
i have a couple of questions about titling and bikes. im from Australia and now live in north jersey, one of the last bikes i had there was an 86 cr500,i sold it because there was no way in hell you could put that beast on the road there.
its been a while and the bug apeers to be back....
what i really would like is a kx500 sfc on the road. Now i have seen an 04 street legal kx250 in NH recently that looked like a good starting point.
my questions are. say i buy that 250 from NH (or any other state for that matter ) will i be able to tranfer the title to a NJ title ?
next question . is it just the rolling chassis that makes a bike able to be street titled ? for example....if i got this kx250 from NH and got it transfered to NJ, and i week later the 250 engine exploded while legally riding on the road and i replaced it with my kx500 engine would it still be "street legal " ?
please feel free to chime in with any thoughts and experiences.
American DMV is alot different than Australia...

The frame vin is tracked and I would not say anything different. You would not tell the DMV your 81 ford Pinto had a 600 hp engine in it when the vin reflects a four banger, they don't care. They care that the VIN matches the frame. A K5 on the street is a blast BTW!!!! Good luck!

Go to to your dmv first off and see it it is legal in your state to convert an off-road bike to a motorcycle. Once you do, you need to buy everything you can to make it legal per your states requirements. Than you will need a safety inspection done. Oh, keep all your receipts cause they will need them for tax purposes. Than you go back to the dmv and pay to have the title changed. Oh, and take your current title along with the paperwork the dmv gives you when you get it inspected. That way they can verify the vin numbers. I legalized my frankenbike not to long ago. Was a long process here in Michigan.

Every state is differant. Here in California you can't do it unless your VERY shady.. Got mine done lol

In Oregon the easiest way to do it is to buy a frame that has already been plated in another state, then swap all your parts 8-)

ha, NV is easiest I've heard about so far, buy the $160 tusk dual sport kit take it to your local motorcycle shop, have your mechanic buddy sign off that it is a 4T 250 or whatever you would like to call it, take it to the dmv they check the odometer and that is it... they dont even check vin at the DMV they believe whatever the shop wrote down on the "DMV form" took me less then a week to completely street legal my 2009 300xc-w and under $200

I did the tusk kit. I also intigrated a 91 kdx 250 ignition box and 94 kdx 250 flywheel, stator and wire harness to run my acrabis headlight and a regulator/rectifier from radioshack to charge my battery. I'm using the supplied tusk battery, but I will change it out to a better one when it dies.

mine was simple, ktm already came with a headlight battery and enough juice to run it all, it was literally a night in the shop zip tying and routing the kit and i was done.
