i have brought a 1987 kx500 n its a basket case, i am sending the engine off for a total rebuild top n bottom, do i keep the steel frame n refurbish it or go down the ally frame road ? if i go down the ally road then which year n model would be suited for my 87 engine ?
if i keep the steel frame then i will need the rear bolt on section of the frame coz mine as been hacked at and the top of the rear shock frame as been welded :( many thanks

Hello and welcome to the site.
What kind of riding will you be doing?
Are you having your engine built back to stock or are you modifying it?

here is a pic that will answer your question... my 87 kx250 with the 41mm usd-fork . you could also use the blue 43mm fork.
the steering-bearings are the same from 1983- 1991
-
Thank you so much I will look for a kx250 1990 front end :) ..... Don't surpose I can fit a 1990 kx250 rear wheel can I ? Am also after a rear frame cradle aswell coz this1 has been chopped up .... Any help wud be greatful as my whole runnin gear is knackered :(
Welcome
-
the rear wheels fit ´86- 2002 models. in ´89 came the newer brakes. at the moment i use a ´93 rear wheel of my ´93 kx500sf, cause i have many ´19 tyres and still dont found the right 18 tyre that i´m looking for .
i´m not sure if the 88-2004 kx500 subframe will fit to the ´87 , but i think it could solve the problem i case you dont find an 87 subframe.
86-2004 gearbox is all similar, ther were only changes in 88 came a diferent input shaft with the newer clutch. in 89 an faster second gear. all 89-2004 transmission parts are still available in new . you could also loking for good used parts, if you want to safe money.

:-D... thats why we all are here for... 8-)
this site was a real great help with my k5-projekt.
i builded my kx500sf from quite nothing started with a ´93 250 frame and bought all parts on ebay that could fit in any way and after 2 years, is it finished but with some carb-jetting -problems in the moment. all i need is a little bit more time to ride and testing. ...i love this bear power since i rode it the first time in november last year...
before i started the build, i had only a great knowledge for 250´s and here is is nobody around me that could help me, cause to less kx500 where sold here in germany over the years. in 2003 the last year for the big kx in europe were only 8 bikes in whole europe sold .
... if you always keep your eyes and ears open, you could learn new things every day... 8-)
-
Thank you motopunk :) ..... I sold my Rmz 450 09 to fund this 1987 basket case, I send the engine off this weekend for a total rebuild top to bottom by a bloke who only works on kx's for a full rebuild including portin n polishin, piston, clutch, bearings, seals the list is endless :( but I see a light at the end of the tunnel and my vision for a kx5 will be worthy of a magazine feature :) ...... My old forks are gettin refurbished even tho im puttin a kx250 upside downers on and Im buyin a new rear shock with all new swing arm bushes and the bike will be rolin on warp9 wheels :) (anodised green of course :) .... I will post a few pictures up once I have the basic rollin chassis together
-
i cant wait to see pics of the bike in progress ... 8-)

I'm surprised nobody on this site has one..
I would email that guy again.
Sometimes emails get lost in the mix.
I'll check around but don't hold your breath on me finding one quickly :|

rebuilding old bikes is often a way full of adventures in finding good used parts...
in my case with my 83 kx250-rebuild it was very hard .. i just bought this bike 2010 in bavaria for 150€, the owner doesnt know the right year , complete disassembled, worn 2.and 3.gear , missing the carb, later i´ve seen that both fork legs were bent :| and at this time i had my newer-bikes-knowledge and knew only ebay-germany and even the kx-dealers for getting parts. i had to learn so much and to find the guys that offers new and good used parts for old bikes.
later with my kx500sf- projekt i found this site and many new knowledge of the great guys here.. :-)
now with the 87-project it was easy to make in ten days... the bike had a good base with an fresh top end, the usd-forks, original forks and 2.engine without cylinder .the exhaust pipe was badly worn. many needed parts i had in spare like the frontbrake-master-cylinder, wheel- and linkage-bearings and tyres. the half of the rebuild-time i was waiting for the ordered spare-parts that came from netherlands. last part came the day before the first planned race on june 2. 2013. :-D
so it was real fun to do is in the short time 8-)
then the raceday was an mud- and hard-rain-disaster, but thats another story... :-D
-
I have a frame !!!! Yeahhh ...... It sounds like you have had your work cut out motopunk :( but like you say it's all about the adventure and the build :) I'm happy now I have a straight low hour bike frame which will look good all powdercoated up in green
-
i have always no much money in the hands, but in the end seeing the ready bike sitting in garage and take the first ride is the big feeling, that makes it all worth... :-D
-
I have an 86 I am building. I chose the aluminum frame route. I have a like new pro circuit pipe if you need. Also I will look at the subframe, possible could help you there.
-
how much for the pc-pipe? :-)
-
Very good at it.
