Hi I just got my 500 running. I am using an 38mm airstriker and a Rad valve.
I have a JD needle in the middle position and 168 main. I forgot my pilot. The quesiton I have is should this engine feel and sound chrisp? I had a few other 250 two strokes and they sound clean and chrisp. This sounds soft. Is it from the larger displacement? It feels good and very powerful. It does not feel weak at all, just doesn't sound tingy like I am used to. Maybe nothing.
Thoughts?

And As I Found Out, The Rattle You Hear In The Video Is Normal. EXhaust Valve Rattle.

Yep, if you listen to Motorrads engine you hear the same thing and his is as finely tuned as any I have heard..

Like this...! :-D
Without "rattle"...

no vibration in that motor...almost a "hint" of 125 smoothness in them there rpm's.

Since everyone is chiming in..
and if your using these bikes as comparisons. Mine, Doordies, and USMC500's ARE NOT STOCK... USMC500's is the closest to stock out of the bunch.
Mine.

USMC 5000's (for some reason his camera makes the pipe sound "Pingy" er than it actually is in person.

and to answer your question. No... a stock port time K5 will not sound Pingy or crisp like a 250. now. to say. crisp is a bad description, because the jetting shouldnt be Mushy, or rich. but it wont have that 250 sound.
As far as helping you out with that airstriker. I dont even know where to start with one of those... never set one up for a K5, or knwn anyone that has...
But the Big K5 is very picky about needles, and Slide cutaways. even with its OWN stock carb.. (pwk) have a slide cutaway that is one step off, and they run like POOP... same with the needle.

Thank you for all that answered. I think I am right there. I looked into it and I am on a 168 main, the JD red top needle in the middle position, and I have a 58 pilot. My fuel screw is 1.5 turns out. I took off the plug after some shredding of the yard and it looks right. Slightly tan, not wet and no dark spots. It idles nice and makes the power. I was just expecting the 250 chrisp-ness, but I guess these aren't that way.
I have this in a 2001 RM250 steel frame chassis and I am using a CR500 DEP pipe. The pipe might throw things off a bit. I have a Wiseco in it, and Eric Gorr ported and epoxy pored my ports. It seems nice and smooth. I guess I have to check it out some more after a day of riding.
Thank you.

Although mine was an ex factory race bike, I think it's very close to stock. Here is the start up right after I put the thinner head gasket after the compression release mod. Apologize for the shabby footage, shot from my phone. Still had some old gas, so I'm surprised it fired up and sounded well right off the bat with 91 pump gas.
Start up.

And running for a bit.
