Welcome to the site. Lots of great info and people on here. Dig around, use the search feature and enjoy.
Parts should still be pretty easy to find. There are may sites that still carry a decent amount of oem and aftermarket parts. Ebay is a good place for used and new parts. OEM parts I like to get from www.bikebandit.com Shipping is reasonable and most of the time the cheapest prices as far as parts go.
As for other engines just bolting in...A 89-94 kdx200 may fit pretty close and maybe a early 90's kx250.

250-engines dont fit to the smaller rails of the 125-frame ...
you can bolt in all 125 engines from ´90-93 without any changes to the cooling system. all other 125 engines from 94- 2002 would also fit to the frame, but need modifikation to fit the cooling system to the engine.
here you could find some oem-parts of all older japanese bikes and also compare the possible interchanges between the years..

I didn't think there was much difference in the frames between 125's and 250's except motor mount plates. I've never tried to put a 250 in a 125 frame though either. Also never owned both sizes at the same time to compare them.

frames are equal. the diference between 250 and 125 are the smaller frame rails on 125 for the smaller engine...
