keep in mind you can buy a brand new aftermarket one too... OEM size or oversize, like this one from Clarke(not actual tank pictured)....might be worth lookin into.

That is the guy I used for my K5 oem tank, it was made after order, that was in the add. Tank fit is great. His communication is quick, and I have no complaints!
I will be using him for any other tanks I need! :-D

Ok thanks alot guys! I didn't know you could still buy one new I'll just do that. I'm thinking of that tank and maybe a tall seat. Should make it a lot easier to slide up front for turning. Cuz i sure cant now lol.

I dont think you can buy after market kx250 tanks. The european kx250 has a much smaller/sleeker tank than the 500. they are as rare as hens teeth. I have an original plastic one here(which is for sale,£250), but GMX do an alloy version much like the Grand Prix bikes of Kurt Nichol, £450.

Foxx4beaver, I was lookin at that tank on eBay and actually wanted to order that next week. But I looked at it more and than looked at the 88-04 kx500 tank and it is the exact part number as their 88-89 kx250 tank. So it looks like their tryin to give people the kx500 tank either way.     I really want the 250 tank and can't even find a used one

good catch....they do seem to be a rare item....if you wanted to spend a fortune on an aluminum one, then I'd try husky333's option...other than that, just keep looking, even if you have to buy a whole junked 89 just for the tank.

have you actually tried contacting Clarke,Acerbis,or IMS to actually "talk" to someone?...who knows, one of them may even be able to point you in another direction.

Last night before i realized the part numbers were the same, i emailed them..
Dear enduroshack,

Hello i am interested in this tank for my 99 kx500. Research on a kx forum site. Says the 89 KX250 Tank is a direct bolt on. the 89 tank KX250 is slimmer and shorter than a stock KX500 tank. The picture on your listing is MY same tank (Not the tank i want) So is this tank the slimmer and shorter one (not so tall)
From what i understand 89 was the smaller tank but not 88. Thanks i cant wait to hear back from you! Josh

They replied as if they didnt understand my question.
Dear bilger69,

Happy Tuesday Josh! We offer 3 different options for your 1999 KX500 as follows...you can get a real good idea of the geometry from the photos:

again good eye,I never even looked until you just mentioned it.
And I'd be willing to bet those guys understood your question...I would have to think that they're probably just hoping to make a sale...I could be wrong, but that's my guess.

Good luck either way...if I see one for sale in the future,I'll PM you.

I honestly don't know if it was a European thing or not,I would'nt think so,but since I don't know,I'm not gonna challenge it  :-)...there are a few guys on here with 89 250's....maybe they can shed some light on this.

the tank on 88/89 kx250 is exactly the same as 88- 2004 kx500. and the only diference between us models, australia models or european models was fork-, shock-, or carb (jetting) . all other is equal.   :-)

Moropunk this is a 89 kx250 tank. Whether it be u.s or European I have no idea. But it's not the same. If ordering from a tank manufacture they sell you the kx500 tank because they bolt right up to either bike.

this is a custom tank, which will fit on 89 kx250 or 88-2004 kx500 . and looks better than stock  :-D

I am not sure where you can buy the tank.  :| in the middle and late '80s some of the factory gp kx  also had these manufactured aluminium tanks.

I just compared a few oem numbers of 88-2004 kx500 and 88/89 kx250. there are different numbers, because of the different decors and colors over the years. But all the old numbers are replaced by oem number 51001 14736W. stock tank is still avaiable in green (or black 03/04 KX500).
€ 375.50 . dont know how much it is in us dollar.  you better look for an good used tank...

that is the stock kx 250 89 tank shape not custom, i have seen many over the years but they are getting hard to find now. but they are around and a few end up on ebay but dont last very long before they are sold and demand a high price these days

Keep diggin' bilger69 and you will find one.
Been looking for a while myself. I just scored one last week for a build I've got going on. I had to buy the whole turd just for the tank :-o. Not alot of money but the seller was advertising it to need only a motor :?. Looks ten times worse in person and I was ashamed to even load it in the truck and drive home!
How bout the drum brake and makeshift swingarm bolt that did not go all the way thru.

1989 250 tank on top...K5 tank below that.
The pics of the K5 tank do not have the tank mount bolts in and it slid down so actually  the K5 tank still sits a tad taller at the top than what the pics show for comparison.

I only ride woods, tight single track with various changing conditions(hills, rock, creek, logs) and a lil MX. I'm with you in thinking a tall seat foam with the 1989 250 tank is the way to go!!!
Keep Lookin! It's out there somewhere!

Thanks alot for the comparison pictures rip roost!  And for the encouragement. You are one lucky guy I searched all last night on ebay, google, for tanks and complete bikes. With no luck. What a treasure hunt!   The tank in the picture I posted is different than yours and I would live with either one. It just makes me wonder what tank was on that kx5 I posted in this thread. Thanks again!

Looks like I may have to buy this one. I THINK this is it. 539 US Dollars though! That's a lot of money.  It's an alloy one that husky333 was talking about. Just worried about denting it.      Here's a link to the site.                                                                     http://www.gmxradiators.co.uk/cgi-bin/sitewise.pl?act=sect&sterms=&s=52&offset=8&pt=47&id=gmx

if you're worried about denting it...that should tell you right there, don't buy it!...UNLESS your plan is to keep it in your living room as a show piece, and never ride it.Not sure what kind of riding you do,but one failed hillclimb, and the bike tumbles back down the hill, there's a good chance it'll get beat up.
Plus,if you're worried about it all the time..it's gonna keep you from riding the bike to your full potential...you'll always be favoring it.
If it were me...I'd keep waiting for an OEM plastic one....you have to ask yourself,is it something you absolutely "need",or just want. Now,God knows I spend money faster than I make it,but $500+ is alot of money to spend on something you don't want to get dented in a sport where it's next to impossible to prevent. Not trying to advise you how to spend your money :-D...just giving my thoughts on your concern about dents.

Thanks Foxx! That's gotta be the best thing I heard all day I would have to say your right.  I better just sit back and relax and keep searching. I spend money quicker than I get and I think I have an addiction to spending money on my bike lol.  The tanks is a "I really want and gotta have" but sure is not a NEED.  So I best calm down and wait for a plastic one.

no problem...like riproost said,"keep diggin and you'll find one".
I remember a year and a half ago I was searching e-bay everyday..several times a day..for about 8 months looking for a 98-2000 OEM green seet. Finally found one that was almost new for $50!....patience 8-)

Title: Re: Wanted: 89 kx250 tank
Post by: Foxx4Beaver on May 23, 2013, 09:28:22 PM
yes,the 88 is bigger/bulkier...that's why the 89 tank is hard to find and sought by many.

Does the 500 seat fit the 250 tank "cutout" area the same way the 250 seat does? Or should you use the 250 seat with the 250 tank?

I would call them 1st...because there's a 99.99% probability it's discontinued....I know Rocky Mountain has them listed as "not shipping", which means they're discontinued.
I can't even buy an '03 or '04 black KX500 tank because they're back ordered...and if there isn't a high enough demand for them soon, they too will slip into the discontinued category.
