I was under the impression that the Tecate and the KX250 shared the same engine.

nope. close but not the same. the porting was differnt and the tranny was geared different in 84-85 t3. the 86-87 t3 have totally different power valves.

IT'S A KX MOTOR.  THE TECATE MOTOR WITH THAT STYLE OF POWER VALVE ACTUATOR WOULD BE COUNTERBALANCED AND WOULD HAVE CAME FROM A TECATE-4.  I'D GUESS THAT'S AN 87 KX250 MOTOR.

the 86-87 tecate 3 had the KIPS engine with no counter balancer. the power valve actuator parts were located above the water pump. not like that one.
