Title: Show me your Gnarly Desert
Post by: bilger69 on February 21, 2013, 12:40:59 PM
Can someone show me a picture of the FMF Gnarly Desert Pipe on the KX500.     I searched all over this site, all over google, all over youtube. For about 2 hours with no luck. Does it look any different than the Gnarly Woods (on my bike)

If you need better pics, just ask.The 1st 5 are all desert pipe.

(http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x393/foxx4afoxx/mxz-x/HPIM0827.jpg)(http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x393/foxx4afoxx/mxz-x/HPIM0828.jpg)(http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x393/foxx4afoxx/mxz-x/HPIM0832.jpg)

these two are the Woods pipe...notice where the FMF stamping is,it's pushed forward a touch like the stocker, where the desert is straight(more free flowing)...and the other pic shows the more abrupt curve in the stinger...where the Desert pipe is less curved at the stinger.

The woods falls on its face at about 5000 rpm and the desert keeps pulling all the way to over rev.....here is a picture of the desert gnarly on my bike.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Alot Motorrad, Foxx, and USMC. I really appreciate it. Finally i seen the pipe lol   I am gonna order me one in the next couple of weeks. I favor the mid-high area so that'll be alot better than the Gnarly Woods for me. Plus mine is dented and cracked. Also ya just cant beat the shine of a new pipe :-D.  Awesome Bikes BTW    Thanks again.

Make sure you order the right Gnarly part number.....

020038 is the Desert Gnarly

020055 is the Woods Gnarly

You'll love the desert gnarly if you're looking for mid to top......

only problem ecpecially with the flat fender mod(which i think looks gay)is the slincer hangs down TOO low,i put slight bend in it and puts the silencer up high out of harms way!i liked the pro curcuit pipe hits harder then the fmf gnarley, but pc was out of stock when i was building my 5

If I had a choice. I'd run the procurciut plat 2. Over the fmf

Do you know if there's any difference between a Platinum and a Platinum 2?

Thanks guys. Nice bike DFL. The angled up silencer does look good i might have to try that.   Motorrad and Dfl, i actually just ordered the Gnarly Desert and Powercore Silencer this morning. Sooooo, i guess i'll just save up for the PC Platinum 2 and some type of PC Silencer :-D. Doesnt hurt to have extra pipes plus then i'll get to compare the 3. (my woods, desert, and Pc2)

youll never notice the differance between the FMF desert, and the PC2 without a dyno.   dont worry about it.

all the pc pipes for the 5 are the same, plat and plat2 only diffference is thicker guage the 2 is thicker, the works pipe is the same as the plat2 just raw.the works pipe is bad ass but requires wd40 and a little elbow grease to keep from rusting.the carbon fiber pipe guard for my gnarly dez pipe fit like s**t! i threw it in the trash waste of money.i feel the difference but i had pc port and cut my head for c12 gas,ill take a pic with the side cover off this afternoon if you need a better view

Good info, I always wondered exactly what the difference was, just never bothered to ask. Now I definitely see the differences, and I have the low end Gnarly pipe..

This is a great thread.  It really explains why my half way worn out 90 KX5 with a Pro Circuit Platinum had lots more top end than my fresh 95 KX5 with the FMF low end gnarly.

I think I definitely need to get the FMF KX5 desert pipe!

That could very well be Enginerd, I'll post up the mid-top improvements when i get my pipe/silencer on. i'm waiting for my new pipe mounts from bikebandit right now. (all 3 Of mine were stripped and tearing). Should be here this week. Thanks again guys

Well I got my pipe and silencer on last night and took it for a spin this evening.  The mid-top power is absolutely ridiculous compared to before!  I really can't believe the difference it made to the power and delivery. It went from powerful to insane mid-top. I did notice a slight loss in low rpm power. But for me that's no problem. I highly recommend the gnarly desert or PC equivelent's to anyone lookin for mid-high snap.  Best $307 I ever spent (pipe w/power core).  Thanks again everyone for the input and pics.  :-D

you're welcome....the little loss in low end can be easily overcome by a simple grope of the clutch lever :-D

No problem, thats what we are here for, glad you are super happy with the results, and remember to clean the pipe after every ride and wipe it down with a light coat of wd-40 to keep it looking as new as possible.  The pipe in the picture I posted for you at that point had like 8 good rides on it and it still looks great.

Ok I'll have to do that Usmc, I cleaned it but didn't wd-40 it.  Going to do that right now especially if it kept your pipe that nice I thought the pic you posted was when you first put it on   :-D    Never seen a new looking pipe on a ridden bike   More ppl should use wd-40 apparently lol thanks

Make sure you don't dent the pipe if you go down......no amount of cleaning and wd-40 will take out dents.

I ordered the Desert Gnarly pipe and Powercore silencer yesterday!  :-D

I can't wait to swap out the Woods Gnarly and Turbine Core spark arrester.

I've heard that the spark arresters cut the top-end power back a bit too.  Anybody had that experience?

It'll be nice to have both setups in case I want to switch back and forth.

Your gonna be really impressed! I'm sure it cuts back a little all I can say is if is a night and day difference. Changes the power output from woahhh! To what am I ridin?!    Kinda feels like a 600cc crotch rocket in the dirt.      And with that pipe combo I noticed the higher the rpm the more power it puts out. Haven't felt it ever sign off like the woods and turbinecore did.  Congrats on the purchase! And hang on

Ok guys, for anyone else still trying to tell the difference between the Desert Gnarly and the Woods Gnarly, here are some more pics of the 2 types of pipes on the same bike.

First is the Woods Gnarly and Turbine Core spark arrester:

Second is the Desert Gnarly and Power Core silencer:

I haven't been able to ride the bike yet to evaluate the change in power, but I'm sure it'll be serious!

Why? Better power? Power in a better range? When I checked PC's website tonight they only listed the Platinum available for the KX500, no Platinum 2 or Works.

To return to the original thread, the explanations and information provided in this thread are fantastic. I have the FMF Fatty on a '00 KX500. How does the Fatty compare to the Desert Gnarly or PC?

Thanks.

OK. Found some Platinum 2 in stock at online MC shop for same price as lowest Ebay price. So I can get one, but why the PC over FMF? Platinum 2 product description description mentions more low to mid-range power; is this at the expense of the upper range?

Thanks for the information.

I rode it with the Gnarly Desert....and it rocks!  It lost about 20% of the low RPM power compared with the woods pipe, but feels like it gained about 40% in mid and top-end!
