Title: studded snow tires

Need some info on studding out some tires for my michigan winter riding season, like what size srews or studs do i need ? and how much should stick out past the knobbies ?  I plan on abusing my stock rubbers for this adventure.Any hints or pics will be helpfull.

Thank you for the info, I think i'll try home made first because i have applied for a street legal title and the stock tires are not DOT aprroved (meaning real one's are $$$$). Updates soon.

   I have done a fair bit of winter riding.  The easiest and cheapest is to put sheet metal screws in your knobs.  For general riding, 1 screw in each front knob and for the rear 1 or 2 in the side knobs and three in the center for some straight line traction.  You can use normal sheet metal screws but there are ones made for ice racing that are hardened and have a higher lip (it's the head that gives the traction) and they work so much better that it's not really worth using normal ones.  To be competitive in ice racing (at least in Canada - may be different elsewhere) you have to run a certain tire that works best, profile the tire on a machine and use a special (secret) screw pattern.  I'm in BC and we buy our tires pre-made from specialists in Quebec since they are the best and it shows in performance.  Funnest winter riding where I live is to wait until the snowmobile trails freeze (lots of huge whoops) then blast down those. Big fun. Cam.

Thanks Cam,that would be great. I dont plan to race but having some fun in the snow wouldn't hurt or will it ? ( ha ha).

  To have some fun only a few screws are required and it doesn't really trash your tires.  I post a pic tonight. The only hurt I ever found is after blasting down frozen snomobile trails at speed, if you go off the trail into the deep snow the front sinks and you go over bars fairly spectacularly.  Luckily its snow and it doesn't hurt.   Here's some pics of some ice screws I had laying around. The newer style have a higher lip on the screw head and work considerably better.  There are 2 types here, short & long.  The short are best, the long only fit in the tallest of knobs.  Enjoy. Cam.
