Title: KX85 bottom end
Post by: gwcrim on October 12, 2004, 05:31:48 AM
Well we got the KX85 and the boy was riding it, oh maybe 10 minutes at most when the bottom end locked up.  Bad crank bearing.  @%#$!!!!

Is this something that a very competant backyard mechanic can fix?

Yes.  I think I have a post on splitting the cases on a 500 here on the site somewhere, and the instructions should be about the same.  With the small bikes, I have even installed my own rods, and the rotating mass is so light that you can be a little off without creating problems.

If you get started and get stuck, just post up some questions and pics, and we can help.

Well I wussed out and took it to the local Kaw shop.  I really wanted it done right, the first time, and in a timely fashion.  It may have been months before I got it done myself.

But I would really like to learn to do it so the next time......

They are pretty easy but time is a big deal when you are married with kids. Ive split the cases on 3 80's when I was younger. Just dont end up with extra parts. HMMM
