All depends on who you are and what you're willing to pay.In my opinion, there are too many fools out there that think they're sitting on a pot of gold. For example, there was a guy about 1 1/2-2 years ago that had a brand new 04 K5 that never even had gas in it,I can't remember where he was located....he started by asking $10k!!...after about a year, the price had dropped to $5k,and I think it sold.

I constantly see money hungry fools listing older BEAT-UP K5's for $2500-$$4000...and I want to so badly e-mail them and ask them if they're "plugged-in"...cause it's never gonna sell.

Look on e-bay right now...there's a 92 on there that the guy has listed for "Buy it now" for $2900,or the starting bid for $1999...I would'nt offer him any more than $800 for it...because you can be sure it needs at least $1500 in repairs that the naked eye can't see.

I paid $1500 for my 95 in June of 2011...a little high,BUT I knew I was going to be tearing it down and doing it completely over....since it will be one of the last bikes I buy.Between Kawie parts and a few aftermarket items...I'm into it for about $7500...but I'll NEVER get that back,I'd be lucky to get $2k.
Again,it all depends on how bad you want it,and what you're willing to pay....another way to look at it is,I think a brand new K5 went for about $5k in 04,give or take,so how much more than that would you be willing to pay for a brand new, never used K5?.

Well a new bike today is like $9000 isn't it? So.. A brand new kx500 , a bike that hasn't been made for years should be worth that. Maybe a little more.

Just looked and a brand new kx450 is $11000 with tax

Are you saying that you'd be crazy enough to pay $9k for a K5??....please clarify....because that's what you're making it sound like.

I didn't say that I would pay 9k for a kx500, what I did say was that it was a reasonable price for a brand new K5 compared to what a new bike costs today

Now who would be CRAZY enough to put $7500 (plus the original purchase price of $1500, making the total to $9000 ) into a K5????
For that price you could have a brand new one , where every single part is brand new .

I don't think you read my first post properly, you may want to read it again....$7500 is total...not $9k...and that's over a year and a halfs time, not all at once...so,before you start attacking, you need to be sure you "have all your ducks in a row",and settle down please. :-D.I just asked you a simple question....but apparently there are some people on here don't take it that way.

I had just over $10,000 in mine.  Lots of R&D but fun as hell.  Not another one around like it

Lolololololool I'm not trying to attack you . I'm just saying that the prices people pay can be (or very close to) a new bike.

That's like asking the wife to a wild week in Vegas with the Hawaiian Tropic Suntanning team  :-o and settling for catching a glimpse of her getting out of the shower :|.  Asking and getting are two different things.

I'm asking $50,000 for my 98 KX500 :-D

Anyone who thinks they will get over $2K for any K5 is on crack.

Tried selling my excellent condition, top maintained '01 K5 a few years back and was asking $1900, got ONE call and the guy was a chooch...  bike never sold, so I kept it.

Funny the prices there in the states are low as here in the UK they are getting good money and if its an 1989 model they are getting over 2500 pounds I know as I have bought 2 this year. That because people are wanting them for the EVO class racing and newer one are over 2K pounds. Basicaly its sale and demand make it whats it worth.

Time of year does play a part though , right now $1000 sounds HIGH

Spring / Tax return time when the demand is highest prices go up for a couple months

Funny how nobody is willing to pay more than $1500 for a clean complete KX500.........but you find KX500 motors going for over $2000 on ebay all day for all these AF projects......hahahaha.

I'd rather buy a blown motor for a few hundred and rebuild it myself, and know what I've got afterwards, rather than spend $2000+ on one that Joe Blow says is "All rebuilt and ready to go!!"
Just a gamble I would'nt wanna take.

You wouldn't believe how many bikes I buy that are suppose to be all gone through only to find out they are worth more in scrap value then in good parts...

My #1 RED flag that goes up on craigslist is when the seller states "brand new top end, not even broken in yet".  This in reality means "I blew the top end, and am too cheap to fix the trashed cylinder, so I just replaced the rings and it's now for sale"
