Is any one running a 250 ignition on there 500??
I am mid conversion KX500AF and need to replace the stator and flywheel on a 86 motor. Am I right in thinking a 250 flywheel will give a better power delivery and a free'er revving bottom end?
Thanks in advance

no, the 86/89 already have a small flywheel

Ok thanks.. How about the stator and cdi..?? I read that the cdi is 86 only, different part number to the 87 even! and the stator fits 86 only, 87-89 different again.. is this right?? My 86 stator is dysfunctional so I need to replace that or get it rewound, living in the UK there are very few 500's on the island so finding a like for like part I say would be near on impossible. There are plenty of 250's though so really just need to know what years of the 250's I could use ignition wise???

this has been covered a few times before. this thread is from last week there is a link on it to another 1 from some time ago

this is a link for a brand new stator in the u.k. i am u.k based too

beware buying 89 500 ignition stuff as some had the old and some had the new ignition. i think both will work on your 86 but you cant mix the components

Nice1 cheers jonny500.. Those electrex world stators seem good value for a new unit, been looking at second hand ones for 120/150 bucks!, plus postage.. So it is possible to run a early 250 cdi straight on the components I have? how would this effect the power curve?

Pop for the mzb. With light weight flywheel. And be done

it will all wire up and work with 125 or 250 cdi's. i have never done it but i would say 250 cdi would give a very wild power delivery on a 500 and the 125 cdi even more so.

mzb?? :?

Go to the home page, then scroll down about half way until you see,
"MZB ignition w/100 watts of lighting power".

Ahh yea cool I see... But not interested in running any lights so no need for all those coils also I have an 86 with the smaller flywheel so this wouldn't fit anyhow, Just need a 2 coil stator thats gonna produce a cracking spark to get me off the line quicker than a quick thing.. MZB a lot of $$ too.. Think the Electrex World Stators are good value at ?85.00.

If you have any problems, I brought a stator for both my '90 KX500 and 2003 KTM SX200 from regulatorrectifier.com last year. I'm in New Zealand and they did a decent price on freight. A corner was damaged on the KX one and they sent me a new one no problem. I thought I'd have no chance getting it replaced being on the other side of the world.
