Title: Who makes the quietest silencer/spark arrestor for the KX500
Post by: triffecpa on September 20, 2004, 05:02:48 AM: I've currently got an older Answer spark arrestor/muffler installed on my '90 KX5. Even with new packing, it's pretty loud. I've checked the FMF website and they don't list a "Q" model for the KX5. Has anyone tried adapting one of the other Kawasaki "Q" products for the KX5? Any other manufacturers out there that make a nice quiet spark arrestor/silencer for our bike? Thanks

Post by: Paul on September 21, 2004, 02:47:52 AM: A fresh packed stocker is very hard to beat for the quiet. I use one and the enduro's I race require > 98db @ 1M. The thumpers sure hate that but the KX comes in easily at 93 - 94db.

Post by: teamgreen500 on September 27, 2004, 12:26:06 PM: Stock w/ a Sparky (Which means a Sparky w/ A CLEAN SCREEN!) has worked really well for me. I've raced w/ this set-up and the bike runs like it's just got a silencer.

Post by: kawdude on September 29, 2004, 12:47:16 PM: Stock with a Sparky gets my vote. I had a FMF (something or other), freshly packed and it was definately louder. I bought a used stocker and I'm much happier.

Post by: mikesmith on March 10, 2005, 05:40:43 AM: There is a risk from hot carbon,and you could be sent the bill to fight the fire,lawsuites, and do jail time.With out one you can be fined by the BLM or any ranger,its money well spent.If your on a MX track its not needed or private property its your call on running one or not.

Plus, my buddy that I ride with rides a YZ426 that makes my bike sound
really, really quite!!! :wink:

Post by: Timbowe on March 11, 2005, 07:41:41 PM: We have strict rules concerning forest riding here too. The boys usally get S/steel mesh {fine} and form it round the end of the pipe. hold it on with a hose clamp. Dosent stop much noise but stops sparks.

I first tried to make a long thin cone shaped screen to fit inside the pipe but was having trouble figuring out how to fasten it in place. So I just hose clamped a little round piece over the end of the silencer. It should be easy to take off and clean after each ride.

Post by: gowen on March 24, 2005, 02:14:10 PM: I have a PC spark arrestor. But definately keep on the FMF PC when I'm on private land. I just don't like teh idea of restriction. And yes, I have seen fires start by sparks. The carbon in the pipe gets hot, comes apart and blows out the rear red hot. I saw it come out of my cusins bike, hit the ground and catch some leaves on fire. Thankfully I saw it. We had a ban on outdoor fires here in NC a few years back due to a major drout. It was a close call.
