Sorry if this has been covered a million times but I did do a search and didn't find anything in the first few pages of the results regarding noise.
I have a 2003 engine in a 450f frame I just finished and rode for the first time. When I lug it the power valves are extremely noisey. I kind of remember that being normal for early power valve designs of the 80s but thought I better check. Do they typically make a lot of noise or is this just an indication mine need cleaning and adjustment?

Not sure how loud yours are but I can here mine 50 yards away! :-D

This might sound awkward to some...but the cleaner mine are,the louder they are...because they move more "freely".The side valves are new, maybe 50 hours,so they're not worn.I have'nt replaced the center valve yet....but even with new valves,it's no quieter/louder than it was. Some are just known to be loud...but,I would rather hear them working, than not.

Anything above idle and i cant hear mine

The KIPS system on my 2003 500 is extremely loud . I am new to the 500 and unsure what is normal but it is significantly louder than my 2007 KX250 . My 500 engine has good power everywhere so I know they are working .

The cleaner the louder . particularly around idle get a couple revs into it & they should be dulled out by other copious noises

I appreciate all the replies, this is somewhat reassuring.
If I run a group V ester based synthetic do the valves still need cleaning?
