WHAT IS THE SCOOP ON PRE 89,500 ENGINE CASES. I got a set of cases and gear box and clutch from K. Howerton from back in the day when he raced for them.
He said it was from a spare race engine. He said they are probably stock but had factory cylinder etc..Will they work on post 89 for a spare. If not I will put them up for someone with an earlier engine.
Thanks.

83-87 are the same. 88 on up are changed from earlier. According to my clymer manual.

the bearing retainer is the only difference, i have 4 sets here i've compared
-
88 are different as well, 88 had 2 kips valves, 89 and newer have 3

just curios RM, what year cases do you have? i only have 2 yrs 86 and 87.

Took a closer look today. All is good and undamaged. They look to be originally black with no provisions for the bottom of the KIPS valves between the 2 front cyl. studs.Probably for a non powervalve 500. I guess it will all go up on e-bay to a new home.
full cases.gearbox kickstart assy. cluch assy.

'85 cases perhaps??

so just to be clear about the engine cases:
83-87 all interchangable
88 unique
89-up all interchangable
Does this include the clutch cover interchangeability as well. I have an 86 kx500 and would really like to get a spare set of cases now and my clutch cover is smashed.
thanks for the help

This is what someone wrote in the thread

SO I went to Kawasaki's site and pulled all the part numbers and here they are for the cases! So it looks like only 86 cases work for 86. Whats wierd is people always say the 85 is the odd ball?? Anybody got a nice set of 86 cases tehy want to sell??
83 14001-5127
84-85 14001-5158
86 14001-5207
87 14001- 5295
88 14001-5245

just because there is a different part number, doesn't mean they are not compatible. I'm not saying they are compatible, but something as simple as a casting upgrade can result in a new part number. It happens all the time. just food for thought. the only real way to tell is to try, and it sounds like roostius has.

THat's a vaild point!!!!! Thanks for pointing out his earlier thread. Who - what is the clymer manual BTW

So I bought a set of 85 cases and they ARE NOT compatiable with the 86. the 86 has an extra bearing in the case half for the KIPS govener that runs off the water pump in the clutch cover. Anyone looking for a mint set of 85 Cases? Pm me if your interested. So that means I'm still looking for 86 cases if anyone has a set
