Title: Lighting on a budget
Post by: martinfan30 on February 05, 2012, 06:14:51 AM
Hey guys, could I use this 35w lighting coil to run just a headlight? Im looking at procycles DS kit that has a battery to run the other lights and horn.

http://www.1tail.com/Electro_Sport/Stators/Kawasaki_KX500_Esport_Lighting_Stator_Coil_-_ESL220/717160/

Trying to do it on a budget, otherwise I'd be getting an MZB stator.

I also read that as long as the 8th digit in the VIN is not a 3 or a C, its easier to get plated.

That should do just fine for a headlight. I do believe you'll still need a voltage regulator though. I highly recommend using LED headlights. They draw way less power and are bright. I have 2) 6w 3 LED lights on my KDX Quad which has a 35w light coil and they are excellent. I can see from ditch to ditch and about 100-150 yards in front of me. It's perfect for 65ish mph.

Not sure on the vin digits but I'm sure someone on here would know.

I believe that I have the 65w Moose coil. With 4w LEDs it works well. Im going to try the 6w LEDs next. I run a Acerbis LED drop down taillight on the rear.

Yup that'd work just get a big trailer to tow behind you to haul the battery

Do you have a source or a link to the LED headlight? Very curious about that.

Theoretically, I could run an LED headlight and all the other lights(LED's) on just a 35w coil?

Thanks for all the input fellas. :-D

Have the moose coil in mine..   It won't run the 35w headlight till it gets up in revs..    Discharges batt anytime your not going faster than too fast

I assume yours is a standard bulb and not LED? If its just a couple 6w LED's for headlight, maybe the BD LED taillamp(what are they, maybe 5w?) It would work?

Especially if I have an on/off switch for the headlamp LED's, and turn it off during braking and/or turn sig operation(assuming I use LED turns as well).

On my friends 03 KX250 he used a 6w LED MR16 bulb thats supposed to be equivalent to a 35w bulb. This is powered by the powerjet coil. Which puts out around 25w. Even at idle it stays bright. At this time he only has 1 LED bulb hooked up, he's using a Acerbis DHH, dual beam headlight assy. I see no problem running both bulbs as long as they are the LEDs. My plan is to run 2 of the 6w LEDs in my Acerbis light. Ill probably do it closer to spring/summer time. Too cold to do any night riding now!

Same here on night riding... Just want to have something that passes our DMV.

Soon it will be stand up jetski time! SUPERJETS and 550's!!!

If anyone has never ridden one, TRY IT. you will be hooked.

I'm running these MR16 driving lights: http://www.ebay.com/itm/330647062612?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
With these 6W bulbs: http://www.menards.com/main/lighting-fans/light-bulbs/led/mr16-bipin-6w-dim-led-12v/p-1663961-c-6341.htm

If you shop around I'm sure you can find some cheaper lights with LED's already installed. Also if you don't mind waiting you can order the LED bulbs off ebay for less than $10 a piece. I'm impatient so I just went to Menards.

They are bright at idle. If idle is set too low they do flicker. I'm also running a standard 5W tail light. That is brighter now that I'm not running power hungry halogens in the headlights. I may even install a brake light switch so my gf doesn't run into me when I slow down.

Should have no problems running all your lights off the 35w. That's the beauty of running LED's. Shouldn't need a battery either.

Those performance LEDs are the same ones my friend is using on his 250. Also available at Home Depot.

he will need a battery to get through DMV...  have to be able to run the lights without the bike running.    (supposed to be able to for 20min)  but they dont time it.. just a "okay show me the lights, etc working"

as far as Vin Code..

If you have a 3 or a C..   it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a plate.

If you dont have a 3 or a C... it is only Nearly Impossible to get a plate.

My 8th digit is a "C".  Why does that make a difference?  What does it mean?
Title: Re: Lighting on a budget
Post by: martinfan30 on February 06, 2012, 01:17:32 AM
It signifies "competition". Mine is a 2000, and it's eight digit is a zero. Idk why they'd be different.

Hey goat, do you have any pics of your light setup?

I'll get some pics of the lights in daylight and at night and post them up.

I didn't know there was a requirement to have the lights work without the bike running. That make sense though.

I don't remember what company but they make battery packs that are about the same size as rc battery packs. From what I've read they work great. It would be easy to mount just about anywhere. I'd probably just zip tie it to the inside of the airbox.

OK I got some pics for you. Remember these are on a quad but should work fine for a bike as well. These are not mounted in their permanent position. I'll be making brackets once I get front fenders. The night time shot I was close to 100 feet in front of the quad and still couldn't tell there were 2 lights going.

Forgot to post video too. Lights don't dim at idle which is nice. I will be doing the same setup on my gf's Suzuki Quadsport soon.

Luckily NJ did away with bike inspections in 2010. All my bikes are tagged but are not ridden on the street. Maybe cross the road to another trailhead. The Park Police here dont bother with the plated dirtbikes just the non plated bikes that dont look the part and quads.

Thanks goat. Gives me a lot to think about. NV is hurting for revenue and they are letting all sorts of stuff be plated. I have a good chance I feel. Especially since I don't have the closed course/competition VIN digit.

so if you take a vehicle in to dmv that already has a plate and title from another state, will they make you do an inspection other than to verify vin?      here in idaho you can street plate any vehicle you desire. it is your responsibility to ensure it is street legal. there are a lot of road legal dirtbikes in this state.

If you already have a Plate, probably not. Nothing is certain with DMV. I'd call that states DMV and ask.

here in california..   you have to have a CARB sticker..   even if you have had a plate in another state for YEARS... they will revoke it the second you hit the state without one.

Here in NH the laws for legally converting a standard issue "COO" document to a DOT title and registering an "off road" bike for street usage is fairly easy. You need DOT tires, headlight, brake/tail light a mirror, horn, and speedometer.  Here's how I cheaply added lighting to my KX500, works great.

http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,6603.0.html

If you are interested i'll sell you the complete conversion kit as my KX is all torn apart and I won't be needing the lighting system anymore..

I did some searching, looks like the Moose coil has been discontinued. Looks like Electrosport is the sole source. (Moose probably sold the Electrosport unit and just rebadged the product)

If memory serves me correctly, I think the KX500 has a larger od stator, and the KDX200/220 won't interchange. I do believe if you can find a stator off a early 90's KDX250, those will bolt in.

Here's some measurements for the rotor:
