Title: Broken hearted kx owner
Post by: oldman693 on January 30, 2012, 03:24:58 PM
Sunday i went out on my weekly R&R ride . Spent 3 hours on my kx 500 and had a blast . I blew the wheels off of a few inflated egos on some racing 4wheelers . Man I love my bike . To make a long story short I rode it back to my Parents house where i parked my truck and trailer , strapped the bike to the trailer and headed home . well one turn too many and too many bumps i hear a thud from the back . I looked in the mirror and my bike was laying on the side of the trailer . I pulled over reset it and strapped it down better than the first time . I noticed that my right shroud was bent in a little so I pulled it out only to discover the puddle of blue antifreeze allover my bike . so now I am looking for a new radiator set and i am going to go ahead and put new shrouds on it too . mine aren't bad but i am going back to a more factory look . Are the aluminum upgrades that much better and can i use factory shrouds ? has anyone had a fitting issue with them . I am looking at the sets they sell on ebay for 88-04 kx500 .

I bought a pair 2-3 years ago.
The holes were the wrong size which I drilled out and they mounted up just fine.
Then I tried to mount the screens but the mounting plate on the radiator was too thick for the plastic button to go through.
I used some Black RTV Silicone to hold them on and they work fine.
I did not notice any heating problems but I never had any to begin with.
As a alternative you might consider having yours rebuilt by www.icwradiators.com (http://www.icwradiators.com)
Like the owner told me, you get what you pay for.

That sucks about the rad! One of the few 'bad' parts of a water cooled bike. I have three water cooled and one air cooled bike myself. Good luck on the repairs or replacements.
