Howdy From Michigan
« on: August 03, 2011, 02:35:18 PM »
Hello all, my name's Zeb. I've been on a bike one way or the other since I was pretty young, sure there were times that I didn't have anything to ride, but for the most part I've always been around bikes. I'm an auto mechanic by trade and a hobbie gunsmith, I've got a pretty decent collection of machine tools and I'm into casting stuff as well. I recently fell into a KX 500 and through all the web searching for all the info I could find on my newly aquired bike, I wound up here  :-D I've been dirtbikeless for a few years now and in my never ending quest to find another in my price range (I've got a wife and 3 daughters, I'm eternally broke) I kept poking a customer that I knew had a KX500 he was selling, last week he was in the shop and I asked if he wanted anything in trade, as I'm cash poor and "stuff" rich, his reply was that he'd take four 100 dollar bills in trade for it, so off to pawn a couple guns I went and here's what I brought home.

It was set up for flat track ice racing, but it's in pretty d**n good shape. It's got a different rim on the front that's minus the front brake, so I need to locate some stuff to get it put back on. A mouse or 5 made a nest in the air box and after a while extracting mouse parts from the airbox, carb, reed cage and crankcase, some fresh gas and two kicks it was running  :-D It's got an FMF Gnarley pipe on it, and supposedly the motor was "rebuilt" (kind of a very general term, that bothers me) not too long ago. I'm going to have to spend a bit of time jetting it as it seems to need it, but HOLY COW does that thing run, it was the first time I'd ridden a 500 dirtbike, I'm definatly hooked, I'm looking forward to hanging out here.

 Hey Zeb,
Welcome to the site.  There is plenty to look through here,  may I suggest a service manual and or a clymers.
Either or both can be had on ebay or amazon and the best $30  you'll spend!
We have a member that goes by the username Sandblaster who has treated many KXRiders well who may be able to help with those parts  when your ready.  He is a re-seller/cycler.
