--- Quote from: 2-Stroke Tom on July 08, 2011, 04:12:58 AM ---I have 15/45 gearing and have ran my bike out on El Mirage Dry Lake with some friends with 650 four strokers (that have speedometers) and I can walk away pretty good from my buddies bike that runs just under 100 mph. This is with mild porting, fmf desert pipe, stock (brand new) reeds, and spot on jetting. I only did this one time when first bought my 500 just to test it out and to see if the wheels/tires were balanced, but I didn't buy this thing to run out where a road bike can!

Odd, I tried 15/45 gearing out on the ice, same basic mods (less porting) and my engine would not pull this gearing on top end. My speeds and rpms flattend out at about the same 85 mph mark.

I was curious about why my bike wouldn't pull this gearing claim. I went and dug out my "speed" gearing sprockets and I posted incorrect info. The optional gearing I tried was 15/39 . So this gearing is far more taxing on the engines torque. This explains why my engine was flat pulling on top end.
Sorry for the senior brain fade moment..... i'm getting too old for this $hit... :? LOL

In about 1992 Dirt Rider did an article on the baja prep'd KX500. Balanced motor but they said the port work was minimal, factory team yeah right, but the speed they quoted stuck with me as 120mph. Dont remember the gearing, but does this sound right to anyone else. It'd have had to be some long old gears & one stout motor to pull it

132 mph, Won't see that unless you have an OD 5th gear. It seems like the Baja 500s were also running KLR 650 4th and 5th gears for more top end. That's what Ty Davis said anyway.
