KX500 Virgin
« on: May 23, 2011, 07:20:29 AM »
Well, I am buying a 2000 KX500 tomorrow. My buddy is picking it up for me, then when I go meet him in the dunes in July, I get to install all my new parts and go riding.  :-D

I've ridden a KX500 before but not to any extent. I have owned 125's and 250's. Sold all them. Now I'm into the quads. Kawasaki KFX700 V-Force. Buying a bike to dune and swap over wheels, then ride in the dirt at home with my kids. They all ride.

So how much more power does the KX500 have over the KX250?  :-o

I owned many 250s and one cr500 and i know own a 99 k5 and it destroys all of them in power. Even owned a 2007 450yzf and the k5 is brute power. Lots of fun and i ride woods and trees come up fast. Some people say they are scary but i dont see that but then again im not wide open all the time through all the gears. For parts and bolt on info im sure kawrider, motorrad, larry weichman and the other k5 masters will chime in soon.    Great bike purchase you will be fully satisfied congrats!

This one is ported with a pipe and a fresh 87mm top end. Decent shape.

Thanks for the replies. I've been reading on here for 2 days straight and I've actually laughed out loud they way some guys describe the KX500.

I've already got a bunch of parts ready to order after it gets picked up.

Condition and mods being equal 0-50mph the kx250 will keep right up, after that, the K5 starts to stretch it legs and it's bye bye.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

In the deep dune sand as well? Not really what I wanted to hear.

The deep soft sand is where my K5 lives.
Lots of guys can keep up until I hit the upper part of 4th and early part of 5th gear.
After all you can only accelerate so fast.
Where the K5 shines is in longevity on the sand.
It does not have to work very hard to get it moving and keep it moving.
Ride the K5 with a bunch of 250's for a day.
They are always going wheee....shift.... wheee... shift... wheee.. shift
The K5 goes Brahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Not to mention the K5 geometry just makes the K5 stick better in the corners... at least for me...

I understand what you guys mean now. After it gets picked up and it's officially mine, I'll order my back tire set up and share it with you guys.

How long can you ride on a tank of fuel in the dunes with the K5? The furthest we ride at one time is at St. Anthony from Idaho Dunes RV Park to Devil's Dune and back... riding and tooling around all the way with stops at Choke Cherry and Thunder Mountain (Crapo Hill).

i am new to this site, but have had 7 kx500s over the last 2 years, mainly 1988 - 1992. i currently have a 2003 model that i am trying to sell. its a minter with lots of bling on it and procircuit suspension. i bought it from a guy in Arizona and shipped it over here to England. the bike is awesome and real fun to ride, but at 46 years old i think its too much bike for me. (i am currently building a couple of "specials" for next years vintage MXDNat Farleigh Castle,... hand made swingarms, alloy tanks, cone exhaust and alloy airbox/subframe etc.) once i have posted enough times on here i can put some pics up.
