Renthal Front Sprocket
dmazz71:
Thanks for the replies.
Have you guys had any trouble with the clip that holds the front sprocket on? Do these thing usually break or do they seem to last the life of the sprocket? I did replace the old one when I swapped out the front shaft o ring, other oil seal and collar.
Thanks

That clip has lasted a long time for me on three bikes. It seems to me most of the damage happens when re-installing it. It can get bound up and bent, if you are in a hurry. Other than that, a new one will likely last for several sprocket lives

Cool, thanks
I ended up getting a set of snap rings pliers to put the new one on.

For me it is easiest to install with a standard set of slip-joint style pliers.
Put one jaw on the closed end of the clip and the other on the near side chain pin ... then squeeze. Works every time.
Reverse to remove.

I should warn you, most O-ring chains have pressed master links.
Best to use a chain press - but in a pinch a large set of vise grips and a 1/4-20 nut will do the job. You push on the backside pin with the solid jaw, then put the nut on the sideplate when you clamp down. This way the pin will come through the space the thickness of the nut provides so you can get to the groove for the clip.
