another kx noobie
« on: November 22, 2010, 03:42:04 PM »
Whats up KX riders. Im Rich and a proud new owner of a 98' kx250.
Bought the bike 2 weeks ago for $600. Have only put a few hours on it so far as it needed some maintenance and a good looking over. I?m not new to bikes, however it?s been over ten years since I've have had an mx bike and I?m out of the loop it terms of 2t and general dirt bike knowledge. The internet has helped me get up to speed somewhat but I have much to learn. After giving the bike a good inspection, this is what I have done so far:
First thing I did was CLEAN it. Took off the plastics and fuel tank and cleaned up the whole d**n thing.
The suspension was in good shape. The fork seals don?t leak and the rear shock feels fine. I did take time and clean and re grease the rear linkage bearings as well as clean the fork wipers.
The brake pads were fine. I went through and flushed out the old brake fluid and filled up the front and rear systems with fresh dot 4.
The front wheel bearings checked out but, the rear wheel bearings had slight play so I replaced them.
The moose bars on it were slightly tweaked. Now it?s sporting new renthal 971?s and fresh protaper grips.
The tires were crap. The d752 up front is missing a dozen knobbies and the d739 out back is out of bite.  I bought a new Dunlop mx51 for the front and a D756 for the rear I have yet to mount. From what I have read, these tires should do well in the sandy trails here in fl.
As for the chain and sprockets, they were acceptable. I just cleaned them up really well, lubed the chain and called it a day?for now. Its geared 13/49, up one it the rear from what I have read. Think I may try a    13/50 or 51 when I replace the whole getup, I?ll see.
As for the motor? it ran well, but lacked some nuts imo. I believe it was due to the condition of the pipe.  The copper gasket was missing and the o rings were shot, hence the splooge on the front of the motor. The pipe also had a crack in it that leaked exhaust.
In light of this, I bought a used fmf fatty , new o rings, copper gasket and pipe springs. All I have to say is WOW. Put  a new air filter on it too.
Other than that, I removed the carb and cleaned the hell out of it. I removed the reed cage and inspected it, seems to be all oem . No frays and the petals seat nicely. All of the kips stuff moves freely. With the pipe and reeds out, I could check out the piston. Looked really shiny and no signs of blow by at all. I could fit my finger in through the intake too (with the reeds out) and checked to rod. It had about a 1/8? of play side to side and no up and down play-not that I could check it properly that way, But I guess if it was really bad I could, I don?t know. I also did the ATF thing for the trans, ran it for an hour and then swapped it out for some regular Honda racing trans oil?. Its red too?.lol. The clutch is smooth and it shifts nicly.
Only thing I have to do is mount tires, and adjust the clickers to be more confident. Only complaint I have is that the fueling seems a little rich off idle and lean up top? I have to learn the art of jetting. It is a beast though, an instant wheelie machine on the road and a wheel spinning frenzy elsewhere. The power is nothing like my old 98? yz 125, The power comes in EARLY in the revs, smacks hard in the mid and tappers off up top. A lot easier to ride than my old yz from what I remember. Anyway sorry to ramble on, any suggestions on tuning and maintenance?  Let me know, heres some pics:

After a bunch of reading, I learned all about jetting and how to make the bike run crisp. All I had to do was lower the needle clip to the middle or 3rd position to make it a tad richer and ajust to air screw slightly. After that the thing runs crisp all throughout the rpm range- It now has noticeably more power off idle, a killer midrange and even pulls harder up top. I played with the clickers and got the bike sorted the best I can-really not too bad, feels predictable but likes to be on the gas over small bumps and stuff. If you are going slower, or even worst on the brakes it gives my arms a workout. The new rear tire makes it alot more wheelie prone. In the grass or dirt sometimes you get unexpected lift if you will. If not standing up the front end, it spins the rear wheel like crazy- even just of ilde. On pavement you could flip it over backwards in about any gear without the clutch no joke. After some more decal bling, I have it looking like this:

 :-D
Glad to hear you have her humming along in the sweet spot!
The suspension (as you found out)  can make a world of difference once you get a little working knowledge of the shocks/forks/rake/trail spring rate etc.
Keep up the good work!   The bike looks great  8-)
