Old Dirt Rider
« on: January 30, 2003, 04:30:30 AM »
Most guys I ride with these days say I am as old as the dirt! Well I am almost 57 and I have been riding bikes for 43 years the last 35 years in the dirt and 32 years of that on big bore 2 strokes. I love ridding the soft sand or climbing hills. I am not much into trail ridding, I just like breaking new ground and I like keeping it on the ground sliding around cactus and mesquite bushes and catching jack rabbits.  :)

I have owned a lot of 2 strokes, I started out on a Hodaka, 360Yam, 250 Montessa Cappra, YZ250 , 501 Maico, 2 SC 500 Yam's, Bultaco Alpina 250 & 360, Bultaco 250 Sherpa T, 85 YZ490, and 87 YZ490 which is now my project bike.

I my current toys are 2001 KX500, 87 YZ490, 2000 Montesa 315R Cota 250 trials bike, 2001 Kawi Lacota Sport 300 quad and a 2001Kawi Bayou 220 quad.

( The boss! ) AKA My wife. My wife says "You can never have enough motorcycles" , God love that women! :D

I guess I would like to ride some of the new 4 strokes although, I am sure I don't want to own one! After owning the KX500 and the YZ490 What's the point! "2 STROKES RULE" !

I am still looking for the guy who stole my Bell Star with the knobby prints on it!

Alan,
I just found this forum for the first time today.  I've been looking for one like it because I just bought an 04 KX500 about 2 months ago.  I still have my 84 and 87 490's but I am probably getting rid of at least the 84.  It is great to see that you and David are on this site as well as the 490 site, your experience is invaluable.    Is there any other 490 members on here?

Welcome...  My first bike was a 1998 Huaberg FX600 Desert 4-stroke.  My 2nd bike was a 2004 KX-500.  Primarily because I had ridden all of the other 2-strokes and 4-strokes and the KX500 was the only bike that would give me more thrill than the 600 four stroke I already owned.  However, if you're thinking about purchasing or owning a 4-stroke, they've come a long ways, as I'm sure you know.  In my humble opinion, the only 4-stroke bikes that you would be impressed with (after riding a KX500) would be any big bore European bike (KTM, Husaberg, Husqvarna) or  the CRF450 bored out to a 500.  If you're not willing to spend the money to retrofit the CRF450 (About $1k+) or drop a serious WAD on a KTM, Husaberg, or Husqvarana, I would suggest sticking with the 500 2-stroke.  Nothing beats that.  Since I've bought my '04 KX 500, my Husaberg has been rusting away in the garage.....
