Leakin Head Gasket on Fresh Motor!!

(1/2) > >>

Watercross:
I got this 88 K5 motor/bike in Pieces, I rebuilt the motor compl. splitting the cases and replacing all seals, reeds etc. the cyl was Sleeved so I had it bored and honed. I assembled the motor and finally got it Fired, ran it for about 20 sec when I noticed Coolant leaking from all around the head gasket. I used a ATHENA Gasket Kit and there Head gasket, any advice would be great on what I should have done or should do to stop this. Wondering if anything I Listed below would help

1. Possible Warped Head or Cyl??

2.Crap Head gasket or should have used a sealant with??

3. Lap Cyl and use Cometic head Gasket

4. #3 with sealant??

matzilla:
When we put my 88 together we used the kawasaki gasket, and have had no problems with it. Though we machined the head. Good luck with it.

Purpletj:
I would lap the cyl. and head and put the athena back on.

I have not had a laminated gasket like the ones that are used on 86-88 not leak...ever. They all seen to seep a little. I just got a .010 dead soft copper gasket to try on my '88. I will let you know how it works.

Hillclimb#42:
Cometic are great gaskets. I think I saw my guy spray something from an aerosol can on my copper head gasket to make it seal on an old 86 200. I don't think you can re-use a head gasket either, even though its real tempting since thats the last thing to do before fun time begins.
