I cut only about 2-3 inches off. Just enough to clean it up from a good encounter with the ground. I was not too loud to me, my Dad thought it was though. :|

If you shorten the pipe, will the decreased pipe length change back pressure and your powerband?  Could you post some pics of your bike?  I would like to shorten mine if won't reduce performance.

I don't know that I could tell any performance lose or gain. I just did it back in the day because I didn't have the money to buy a new one every time I flipped the bike. I will have to look for the one that I shortened on the last 88 that I bought. It was a mess so I gave it the treatment. I will post pics if I can dig it up.

Also, Stewart can probably tell you if it make any difference with or without. I'm sure he has dynoed it both ways.

don't worry about 2-3" off of the muffler. These motors run hot as it is. Most guy can't feel a 2hp loss.
