Jerry,

Can you still run premium pump gas after these head mods, or is race gas or a race/pump blend required?   huh

Thanks,
Gary

I think that you are pushing your luck running anything less than 93 octain pump gas in a 2 stroke. If you do any noticable amout of work to raise the compression ratio I think you should run a higher octain fuel. There is a whole debate going on now in this forum on the subject. Riding style also plays a huge part. Low rpm and high load are an engines worst enemy and that is how the KX500 gets ridden in most cases...as I have seen.

jfab, my kx500 is stock.  Our pumps only have 91 octane.  I can get VP 116 locally.  If I mixed the VP with pump 91 how much would you recommend of VP to go with one gallon?  Maybe just a splash?  thx

Fresh out of my very own 1986 kx500-B2 manual, bought the bike new, sold the bike and kept the manual.
"Use premium gasoline with an octane rating equal to or higher than that shown in  the table:

                                             Antiknock index (RON+MON)/2  min rating....90
Research Octane NO. (RON)     min rating....95

I also have a 1989 KX500-e1 manual that reads the same.

91-93 give or take I have run both. I still like the "pushing you luck" statement.

my opinion is if your running a stock head, pump gas is enough.  But, if you were to modify the head and increase compression then you would need race fuel.  If for some reason you feel you need it now, I'd only run VP's Red or 110.  any more and you'd probably be just pi$$ing away money.

Yes. My fixture is drilled for both early and late heads. Ship it to me with a note telling me what you want, with your address and phone number.
