Been lurking around Pit Bull for the past 6 months so I thought I should finally introduce myself. My name is Mike and I live in Helena Montana. I got my KX500 this past spring from a friend for one hell of a steal. Free...I just had to fix it up a bit. I have been riding most of my life (I'm 35 now), but this is my first motocross bike. I started riding on a Honda 50 when I was 6 then my old man upgraded me to a Honda TL125. I spent the next 20+ years riding Trials bikes (some setup for trail riding, others not). I still break out the SherpaT 350 everyonce in and while when I am feeling old. Takes a bit to get used to it again because the bars are like 3 feet long!
Anyway, me, my kid, and some of my buddies get all kinds of riding in around here. My kid races a KX125 in the HCMA (montana circuit) and I tried my first race a couple of months ago. It was a GP, or what they call a GP up here. Mostly just a fun race. Track is about 4 miles around and they run the race for 45 minutes. I got about 5 laps in and it really kicked my butt. Totally brutal (for me). I need to get into better shape before next season. The rest of the time, we just ride the tracks and some trails up in the mountains. The 500 is a blast through the trees. Get it in 4 gear and open it up! My riding buddy rides a tricked out DS650 and he has been trying to get me to go down to St Anthony's Idaho to the sand dunes. He says most of the big bore bikes don't even use paddle tires. "Just keep it pegged and you'll be fine" he says. Hell, I got 4 kids, a mortgage, and a boat load of bills. I can't afford to spend too much time in the hospital
