Motor Comparison by Year

Hello gang,
To keep with proper form, I have first exhausted the search option to the best of my ability on this topic. The search tool, by the way, has been ultra helpful for me in every other instance. I have come to understand that 88-04 are basically the same but I'm trying to find more information about how the 87 motor fits into the mix, specifiaclly mountability. Topics like this one

have titles to get a fella excited about possibly finding answers but lead only to another deadend.

Actually it's the 89-04 that are pretty much the same, 86-88 are the same.

I am so glad you asked this question, since I just picked up a donor '87 KX500 for a hybrid project, and I was wondering about the interchangeability of jugs, KIPS, KIPS drive and linkage, ETC.
I have a few pics of mine after I ripped the heart out of it today:
Reed side:
Exhaust side, where you can see the head, which appears to have munched on something for a while:
Carbon-loaded power valve:
Senator, if I am hijacking your post, let me know and I will cease and desist immediately!

From my limited expereance the 88 lower end is the same as the 89 up they were just short the guilitine style center Powervalve they only had the 2 like the 86 87
don46:
cases are different as well, might be some other issues to.
cutting torch, if the power valve drums are that gummed you may have issues the teeth on the drums, they were aluminum and prone to the teeth going away, an un fortunately they are no longer available.
