newer forks on an older kx
« on: September 13, 2008, 06:20:27 PM »
so, ive got an 89 kx 250, what i would like to do is put the forks from a newer kx500 or older kx 250 so that i have the modern style forks so i can race this thing. in the vintage class it says nothing about altering the suspension, and i figure, as long as its stock its all gravy. so, anyone out there know if i can put a modern fork on this 89 lemme know, thanks.

yeah its possible, have you thought about just having your suspesion re-valved ans re-sprung for your weight?

once you do get newer forks and rear sping your going to have to get suspension done.

you can only go as fast as your suspension allows you to.

Fork transplants are quite easy.  The only part that needs to be looked at in detail is the steering stem. Many same brand forks will use the same steering head bearings even.  For example I just put some CR125 forks on a CRF230.  Same bearings and all I had to do was build a couple of spacers since the steering stem was 1/2" too long. Do some research and you will likely find that someone has already done it a written up a how to guide. Hope this helps. Cam.

KX250's use the same stem bearings til' '91... KX500's use the same bearings til '02... should bolt straight on.. Anybody with a press and a lathe should be able to make just about any front end work on your bike... Just swap your stem into the new lower tripple clamp..

Need to do the same thing with my 86 kdx 200. I know they change. My 500 has smaller stem than my 250. 250 is a 96, and a 98 upper triple won't go on it because they increased mm size of fork tubes. Be careful. Trial and error is expensive and discouraging.

well, my friend has a whole mess of kx500 parts in his garage from wheels to the whole triple tree with forks, rear swing arm and shock. its all from a 95 500. will all of that basically bolt up to my 88 250?
