clutch lever smashing fingers
« on: August 26, 2008, 01:46:58 AM »
im sure this falls into the newbie catagory of questions but I have been using just my index and middle finger to pull the clutch lever in but sometimes the lever squeezes my pinkie and ring finger which are still holding onto the grip.  I would like to keep pulling the clutch like this becuase I want to be holding on or atleast somewhat holding on at all times.  How do I remedy this?

You need to hold the bars with the thumb and index finger. use the rest of fingers to pull clutch lever. That arch in lever keeps you from mashing index finger. It may be awkward at first, but thats how I do it, and can hold on to the 500. Alot of people do different things, but when really ripping it, you are clutching the crap out of it, leaning forward and back so much that you need firm grip and almost automatic clutch response.

Sounds like you have to much free play in the cable.  Move your adjuster out of the clutch perch.  You want just enough free play that you can put the edge of a nickel in-between the clutch handle and the perch.  That way your clutch will disengage sooner.  In other words it will disengage before it hits your fingers on the handle bar.

my k5 has a modified clutch arm, about 8-10mm longer for an easier pull. this easier pull allowed me to cut the clutch lever off about an inch and i bent the end out a little so my fingers wouldn't slip off the end. i can maintain grip with my pinkie and ring fingers and still clutch the bike. i do alot of sand riding and hillclimbing and the ability to easily clutch my bike is a must. hope this helps,  MADDOGGY

have you tried using a "shorty" clutch lever?
i use my index and middle finger for my clutch all day, with no smashing of the pinky or ring finger.
i have the ASV shorty. and perch.

bought it off ebay refurbished for about 20 bucks
