Shock goes which way?

Okay, I feel like an idiot...  I sent the shock from my 86 out for rebuild about 6 weeks ago.  I told them I wasnt in a hurry (they took me seriously I guess).  Anyway, now I'm not sure which end is up, or how the ends should be turned, front or back... I have a book, but cant find that particular info.  It is the kind of shock that has the remote resevoir (spring over hose).  Can someone set me straight?  Thanks.
