Hi Everyone, After ten years I finally purchased another open class dirt bike, a 2001, kx500.  I'm 36 and been riding since I was 10.   I also own a 95 Custom Softail and recently sold my 05 Brute Force 750.  My last dirt bike was a 92 WR500(that I hated).  The KX is awesome!   I purchased the bike last weekend(in amazing mint condition for $2600) and finally rode it for about 2 hours yesterday.  The motor is breaking in and the power is crazy!  I, on the other hand, need some refinement.  I couldn't get out of first gear on the tight, rocky woods trails..LOL.  I had to stop at least twice to catch my breath on the technical stuff.  At 6'3" 275lb, this bike has more than I can ever want.  Now i just need to get back in shape!

Welcome to the sight and congrats on the "new" bike. I use 13-47 gearing and a clutch-ease box for tight trails. My 97 k5 also dislikes the tight trails. It only knows "go fast" and nothing about brakes. You won't need 4th and 5th gear on this bike till you're on real open trails. Have fun, and  keep it rubber-side down!

Welcome to the club :-D
There is lots of info to peruse here and the climate is great.  I think you'll find everything from mild to wild as far as set-up and singletrack, dunes, iceracing, hillclimbing, motocross, supermoto and streetlegal riders.  A few searches on gearing should help with the singletrack rideability. Heck, there maybe a fellow K5 rider near you to run with, and someone is always ready to share notes.
