Hello from Wigan, England
« on: January 01, 2007, 09:36:20 AM »
Hello, My son who is nine on saturday has been racing for a couple of years in the automatics. He has now moved up to the juniors and will be racing a kx65 this coming season. Out of forty riders on the line he will be one of a hand full of riders on a kx against a sea of orange (ktm). People keep telling him to get me to buy one for him, but he is happy with the bike and looking forward to racing it this year. With very few people racing them it's hard to get good advice on what's the best set up for the sand tracks we race on. Joining the site to see if there's anybody that has been there and done it before, that maybe willing to pass on a bit of knowledge to a Dad who has only dealt with the KTM 50 for the past two years and is looking forward to a pro active season rather than just keeping the thing running!!

Welcome! Sand is what I like the best! My advise is lower tire pressures, 9 psi in the front and 6 psi in the rear. The main thing is you need lots of wheel spin so you might want to look going up on the rear or down on the counter sprocket. :-D :-D

Welcome to the site.  Good to have more members from England.  For sand you will definitely want to toss the stock tires and put on some MS2 michelins.  I put the Micheliin MS2 on both my kids bikes.  Excellent in sand, mud and soft stuff and has prevented lots of crashes.  The Kenda millville's are also good in sand (I run them on my 500) but I have not tried the minibike sizes.  The KTM's you are up against likely come stock with those MS2 (In Canada they do).  Also make sure you run the best synthetic 2-stoke oil you can buy.  Doesn't save $$ to save $$ on oil.  This is the place to ask questions so ask away.  Lots of good people here. Cam.

thanks for the help guys its much appreciated, I run the miche MS2's on his bike worked well on his little ktm so stuck with them. Running 46t rear sprocket as standard could put it up to 48 and see how the boy goes first race on 21/1/07 up in cumbria. Took the stock rear shock off and swapped it for a ohlins (what a difference that made totally different bike). Check out his website, he'd be over the moon to get an email all the way from america (there's a song in there somewhere!! hehe!!) Got part sponsored by putoline oils recently so get a good deal on the MX7 2 stroke mix thanks again,  Steve.
