KX500 shift drum interchangeability

<< < (3/4) > >>

Zack:
Final update on the KX500 shift drum.

I now have the engine case back together on the 1985 KX500 and the transmission shifts through all gears just fine!

For the swap/upgrade I used the following parts:
1987- 2004 shift drum assembly
Part number 13239-1143
1987-2004 pawl, change lever.
Part number 13165-1122

Very interesting.
Let us know how it works after you get it up and running.
Remember... we like vids  8-)

Outstanding and good to know!

One more FYI about switching to the late kx500 shift drum and pawl.

After getting my engine back together and running, I noticed that the shifter wouldn’t return to the “neutral” position. I would change to 2nd gear and in order to get back to 1st gear I had to return the shifter to “neutral” position with my foot before being able to down shift.

I removed the side cover and clutch basket for a better view of the shifting action and the issue was clear. The rear of the shift pawl was actually interfering with the engine case when trying to return to the “neutral” position. This problem was remedied by clearancing the rear of the shift pawl some on a grinder. Maybe 1/16” material removed.
Kinda tough to describe here with words but I am sure anyone who tries this mod will fully understand once the parts are installed.

I have since ridden and the kx500 now shifts fine.
