Just picked up a 92 KX500, is in a bit of a mess and needs a fair bit of work. its a US import and has been set up for desert racing with a long range tank, 18" rear wheel and frame modification ( welded on sump guard, water pump and magneto protectors.

Can only get it to fire up when tow starting and it coughs, farts, back fires and stalls

I want to try and get it running first and then strip down for a ground up rebuild

lets see how this goes

Fresh fuel {clean carb}  good spark {new plug}
 A good running  kx will start from TDC in 1/2 kicks cold  { 1 kick warm }

If the motor is in good order /good spark /crank seals etc the flywheel key may be worth checking

Fresh fuel cleaned carb, check plug gap and spark.

will be checking everything else out next working though all in a methodical method

I want to at least get it running so I can Identify any mechanical issues that need attention whilst I got it apart.

Plan is to split cases and go though everything

If you are looking for reliability, that is a good plan.
Mic everything and replace all the c-clips in the trans.

While you are at it, a quick compression test will tell you a lot.
Kawasaki says usable range is 105psi-164psi
After JT Engine Works does one they are typically 190+.
I've seen some at 220+  :-o
Jason uses Wossner pistons and Millennium Tech does the plating.

Sandblaster I been ready heaps of yours and JT's 5 star work, unfortunately Being in Australia I can't use your services. But would love to get as much info of you to make this thing a reliable beast that will last a long time.

I found the starting issue and its got me beat how it even fired up as when I removed the flywheel cover the nut of the end of the crank come of with it and the rotor was just spinning around on the crank. So after cleaning up the thread and a new woodruff key it fired up 3 kick and a short spin around the block to see if all worked and its all torn down
