I've pondered tryin it over the years, but there's been alot of controversy on this subject...so I've held off.
Curious to see if there's still controversy about this subject now that it's been brought up again.
Which type did you use, Dexron?

Cheap automatic trans. oil wont offer the same protection a proper spec gear oil

Just  means  your gears will  not last as long

{EG} IF a gearbox was designed to last  1000hrs and if using atf it only last 700hrs/  will any body notice and blame aft

Some higher spes atf are bad for all the copper bushes in the kx gearboxs

i used aft oil back in the early 90 s but went back to gear oil , couldnt feel any difference , look if your chasing to make your kx change gear better , strip it and polish everything or get one of them treatments done you will feel the difference then, i did a k5 box and it was noticeable better.

I've currently got ATF in my KX by recommendation of a local friend that's used it for years...

i have no opinion one way or the other. No experience with either at this point.

i just got my 89 kx 250 and just used good quality Valvoline ATF type F in it and love the way the clutch and trans shifts compared to my Trx400EX(yeah i know Honda...lol) which i have to run a wet clutch safe engine oil which i run a full syn Mystic 10w-40(made by Citgo) i also run the Mystic sea and snow Jaso FC seal spec 2t oil i dont work for them i just can get it as a good price and its never let me down in any of my other toys but the trans thing in the KX i may try some Gear saver or other type gear oil and see what i get and how it feels

Before I started using Belray gear saver I use to dump my trans oil and run atf for a couple of hours, drain it and put in fresh gear oil.
It was amazing how much garbage gets stuck between your clutch plates.
The atf was a good cleaner but not a permanent solution.
Now that I use Belray gear saver I have had zero issues with my trans.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.
