What year KX 500 motors will fit the 2 bikes I recently picked up .

I have recently acquired to rolling chassis Kx 500s , one has a production date of 7 month of 1987 and the other is the 9 month of 1988 . Can I assume that one is a 1988 and the other is a 1989 ? The bike I am hoping to use is the newer of the 2 . The older one has some frame issues . I am looking to know which motors will fit these bikes . Thanks for any help I am brand new to this site and very excited to do a restoration on a KX 500 !!

Welcome to the site Wrangler1987....here's a VIN# thread...your VIN#'s are located on the steering neck of the frame, and the 10th digit will be the year of the bike.

Thanks a lot for that link . I just made a trip to the garage and as I hoped the better of the 2 bikes is and 89 . I will try and post some pics of this build project . Where I am from , I have never even seen a KX 500 before other then in a video or picture . These 2 popped up on a local classified site and I scooped them up right away . Thanks again for the help !!

i got a 87 engine in my 93 frame so 86-04 will all interchange(probably) but the 86-88 engines does not fit perfect in the 89-04 frame but it fits
