Is a frame from a 87 kx500 interchangeable with later models i.e '92 ish.
I notice the part numbers are different but don't know what else is different.

I believe they changed in '89, then same until production stopped

nope.  The '87 was the odd-ball.  Won't work with anything other than an '87.  If you want to pick up a replacement at a reasonable price, PM.  I have one in almost mint condition.
