Noisy KYB 46 mm conventional forks
« on: August 02, 2013, 08:33:33 PM »
My bike has race tech springs, pvc preload spacers/conventional cartridge forks with KYB 01 fluid. when compress or rebound, can hear the springs against the fork tubes. Anyone know why?  I have removed and reassembled springs as per Kawasaki Factory Service Manual, still noisy.

I'm guessing that's the 1989 forks right?

oh okay cool, i have the same forks too.

is it a rattle sound?
if so , my fork springs rattle too only when the bike has sat for a while when the oil has settled and when the fork seals have been leaking.

This info is slightly disturbing.  I just got a set of these 46mm KYB conventionals from an 89 just to swap them on to my 95 KX500.  I hope everything works out well!

thats the nature of all fork springs.. by compressing they turn like a snake and hit the inner side of the fork-tubes , if there a little bit too much space around the springs, they swing a little bit by hitting the tubes and thats the ratteling what you can hear...

the fork will always work properly, but this rattling sound can make you crazy...   8-)

Got the answer on my noisy forks!  Called Race Tech, their tech man said the springs are the correct ones listed in their catalog for this set of forks, but actuall there is a larger diameter set of springs that would eliminate this noise (caused by excess side movement by smaller diameter springs they sold me!) He gave me the dimensions and the part number for the larger springs.

nice... that sounds like your problem is gone with the bigger diameter springs...
