Hello all... first post here,
I recently purchased an 89 kx 500, but have some reservations, and have considered selling it. I have read, and read, and read on here, and now I have decided to ask a few questions.
Heres the deal,
my frame vin# reads out to be a 1989, but my motor cases read out to be mid year 1988. But I am somewhat still confused on the rest of the motor... the kips system has only 2 side valves, no top valve. And the "KIPS" embelem is glued on, thus leading me to believe that the cylinder is from an even earlier model?
My drive sproket is held on with a nut and my kickstarter is held on with a flange bolt. not an allen head.
The bike has a procurcuit pipe on it stamped "89" will this pipe work to its peak performance with this cylinder?
Am I way off base here? or do i have a bike that has been -miss matched, pieced together?
The motor has a fresh piston in it, and has a ton of compression, but does backfire occasionaly when im trying to start it. The key and flywheel are good, and the stator is on the middle mark.
the bike seems to have good power, but I just feel like somthing is lacking.
I have checked the kips valve operation, and it seems to be up to spec from what I have read on here.
Any help is GREATLY apprecieated. I plan on fixing this bike up nice, but I dont want to start with somthing that isnt what its supposed to be.
Also forgot to mention that it has a 39 pwk carb

sounds like it is an 86 or 87-k5-engine cylinders are the same 86-88 . i use an 86-engine kx500sf ...
your pipe will also work well on it.
here you can find a good base-jetting guide for the big kx... www.oem-cycle.com :-D

Thanks for the reply,
So, what is the deal with the " pre-88" bikes? Are motor parts really that scarce?
I dont particulary want a bike that I cant get parts for 5-10 years from now.
sandblaster:
A lot of parts are still available especially on ePay.
However some parts are by far easier to find for the 89 and up.
In 10 years? who knows what we'll be able to find...
motopunk:
latest k5-modell was 2004 that means up to 2015 are 100% of all oem-spare parts still available.
i think based on this deal with service-kawasaki they will after 2015 still produce all motor-parts for the k5 ...most seals gaskets and bearings are in aftermarket the same or better quality for cheaper price...
i have a 83 kx 250 and now also a 87 and its amazing how much parts are still available in stock and aftermarket 30 years later... :-D
