I had one of these years ago. I put it together with a big bore kit same thing spark, backfires etc but wouldn't fire up. I ended up towing it behind the car while my (Considerably heavier!!) boss rode it and dumped the clutch in third or fourth while bouncing on the seat to get it to fire up!!!
Was quite entertaining but it did the trick it fired into life alright!! After that it would kick start but you really had to get it just past top dead centre and jump on it.
It was a b***** of a bike but I miss it!!!
Good luck

Bought a multi meter. Checked everything found I have a bad ignition coil.Getting spark but weak. Getting a new one. Still going to remove flywheel. See if the key is good and going to put new reeds in it.Hoping this gets it running.

Update, put new ignition coil on. Pulled flywheel off , bolts loose on stator . Tightened, new Boyseen Reeds. Before I made the repairs , least I could get it to back fire.Has more spark now but can't get it to back fire or anything. Anyone have any ideas. Tried new plugs. :-D

Don't know if I started at the beginning when I joined. This bike does run. Bought it early this summer. Just needed a head gasket and new fork seals . Paid 450.00 for it. Put new gasket on and put new forks seals , bushings myself. My 16 year old son weighs 155 pounds could start it. The thing is it kept getting harder to start. Checked everything I mentioned in earlier post. Won't start anymore.

Read on here something about a Stewart bolt. Would this help it start better. Even considered a compression release .
